The Underwriting Process Step By Step

Let's Get Your Policy Started

The Application Part 1

The application is the first step in completing the underwriting process and securing a disability insurance policy.

Once you have received your quotes and met with an advisor you will be directed to a case manager who will be working with you throughout the underwriting process.

Once you are directed to your case manager, you will start with the policy application for your chosen insurance company.

For most companies, this phone application will take about 15-20 minutes and will just answer some of the basic questions like: - Name - Birthday - Address and - Basic Financial Information

When the application is completed we will send you an email with the completed application and walk you through how to sign it virtually.

The most important thing to remember is that this application is not a commitment to purchase a policy, however by completing the application you do agree to allow the insurance company to order medical and pharmacy records for the underwriting process.

Once you have signed the application, you are on to part two of your application. you need to complete part two, the medical questionnaire before the underwriting process can begin.

The Application Part 2

Part two of your application is the medical questionnaire.

This portion of the application gives the insurance companies a chance to look into your medical history in order to access your risk and determine what pieces of your history they want to look into if any.

This questionnaire will take about 15-20 minutes where you will be answering basic questions about your health and health history. Some example questions that you might hear are:

In the last 5 years have you been treated for any heart-related conditions List your current primary care physician name and contact information Provide any current medications, dosage, and reason for medications List any hospitalizations in the past 5 years

Your application will not be finalized and underwriting can not truly begin without this portion completed which is why we encourage you to complete this step within 24 hours of part 1.

After the medical questionnaire is complete, your application will be finalized and sent off to the insurance company.

This officially puts you into the underwriting process and one step closer to your disability insurance policy.

Collecting Documentation

With the application and health questionnaire turned into the insurance company they will now be able to begin processing your application which generally takes around 1-3 months.

If no further questions or concerns arise you can expect to receive your policy offer in around 30 days.

However, it is typical for further questions to come up when looking into your health history or application.

These further questions can lead to extra steps for you such as: Turning in financial information (W2, pay stubs, employment contract) Completing new labs and physicians Retrieving Medical Records Etc.

These extra steps can add to the timeline however if you stay responsive to the email we are able to keep the process from lagging and get you your policy quickly.

Underwriting Review

Once all of the documentation is submitted the underwriting begins. Unfortunately, the insurance industry is slow, so please be patient during this part of the process.

Again if you are young and otherwise healthy, you should expect to see your policy within 1-3 months. If you have further documentation to submit it does delay the process a little bit by staying responsive we are able to speed up the process.

We do our best to keep you informed on where you are at in the process but if there are no updates we will wait so we don’t clutter your inbox with old information.

Signing Your Policy

Once the underwriting process is over, your policy offer will come through and you will be able to review it before making your final decision.

Each company is a little different with how they deliver a policy offer, some companies deliver it via email while others have you review it over the phone or mail you a physical policy to review and pages that need to be signed in pen and scanned back.

Depending on the company you chose, you will receive an email with the policy or an email to review it over the phone with us.

Keep in mind, these policies do have an expiration date with no signature so if you are waiting to sign the policy, let us know so we can avoid having to start the process all over again.

After reviewing the policy if you have any questions or alterations you would like to make we can help you do that, otherwise, you are able to sign it right away and it will be in force.

If you do not have any alterations or questions you are able to sign it right then.

Then you can cross it off your list and have the confidence that you and your income are officially protected.
