Every year when the clock strikes 12:00 on January 1st, millions of people will aim to start a new habit or throw away an old one. #NewYearNewMe

By February 1st, over 80% of those New Year Resolutions fail! So where are we going with this?

PRACTICAL WELLNESS.

When you think of the term Practical Wellness, what comes to mind? Maybe some thoughts of meditation or the practical decisions you make on a day-to-day basis. Maybe the image of all of the failed resolutions you have made.

Practical Wellness is a growing topic that is changing the lives of doctors across the Nation. It is a simple solution that will surpass all resolutions you have made or have considered.

In this blog post, we will talk about what Practical Wellness is and how you can begin making a change in your life, that will last more than 31 days.

THE DEFINITION

Practical wellness is a state of being in control over the life-side of the work-life balance equation through education and outsourcing.

It's comprised of the occupational, legal, and financial aspects affecting one's personal life that often don't get addressed in normal GME curricula.

Work-life balance is something that everyone struggles with from time to time. Work can swallow your life; it can change your mindset triggering emotions like failure and burnout.

After working with doctors for many years, we’ve found that a majority of doctors are struggling with the life side of their work-life balance.

We started coining the phrase practical wellness after we began traveling around the country speaking to doctors and going to conferences with Program Directors and Coordinators, they were always speaking about physician health and physician wellness.

As we began to learn more about what they were focusing on, we realized that wellness to them was related to mental health or their occupation.

However, what we began to notice is there was a lot of practical things that kept a doctor healthy in their occupation and mental health arena, but no one was talking about the things outside of work that played a significant role in physician wellness as well.

Things like work-life balance, family matters, finances, legal issues or time management. All of these things are happening outside of the hospital, but they can begin to have adverse effects in the hospital if they aren’t handled properly.

When you look at things like burnout or depression or failure you can see that a lot of these feelings are stemming from the same thing. A lot of physicians admit that they feel like they are out of control.

Practical wellness focuses on the areas no one else is addressing, and when applied can help keep all aspects of your life in your control.

Having practical wellness means to have all areas of your life under control and to have an excellent work-life balance.

When we coined the phrase practical wellness, we wanted to get it out there and let everyone know that there is another side to your health and wellness.
